(I sometimes used jamespharvey20 as a privacy pen name online.) I discovered a severe bug in BTRFS--a Linux file system that manages data storage--that posed a major risk of data loss. The issue stemmed from improper handling of disk compression, leading to system crashes, unpredictable system behavior, and severe data corruption. I helped analyze the root cause, and fix the Linux kernel with thorough testing and documentation to ensure data integrity for all users of BTRFS.
Building GCC and Binutils together had been broken for about 10 months due to problems in about 100 different files. After investigating, I discovered that these files were never updated when a major change was made. I created a patch that fixed these problems, restoring combined build functionality, and I had the GCC and Binutils main developers accept my patch into their source code.
I was a plaintiff regarding a lawsuit regarding an automobile collision. I alleged liability on the other driver and the parking lot owner. I asked the court's permission to videotape depositions I would hold, instead of hiring a stenographer. My request was denied. I filed an interlocutory appeal with the Michigan Court of Appeals. Unfortunately, the Court of Appeals declined hearing the appeal on an interlocutory basis. The case was settled, so a decision was never issued for the appeal.
I independently researched, wrote, and presented a comprehensive appeal brief before an administrative law judge. (MCL 24.272(1) combined with MAC 792.11103 and 792.10107 allow non-attorneys to represent someone before an ALJ.) The ALJ fully overturned the Department's improper termination of benefits. I am engaging with the Michigan Governor's Office and Attorney General's Office to address the systemic issues in the agency's procedures that I found. This highlights my ability to conduct in-depth legal research, draft persuasive documents, and advocate effectively when allowed.
