I built a custom CMS/ERP from scratch that powers my own websites. The code base is over 1.5 million lines of code, is broken down into plugins, and encompasses over a dozen features.
The alerts' system is a custom-built set of scripts and functions that are used as part of a larger platform. Essentially when writing the code you add error detection logic like if( $var === false) alert( ... ). You then pas various items like what context, the error name, error message, error level, debug info, etc. All this data gets set routinely to a central server via cron. That way by checking a single log It's possible to spot trends, global problems, or even solve smaller site specific issues.
Client wanted to add a widget to her site for users to paste in their poem, and it would return various stats and break the poem down by line.
A couple design concepts...
The idea of the registry is to be sort of like the Windows Registry but for websites. Essentially it's a place to store snippets and settings, but based on data type. Depending on the type of data determines if it shows a calendar, number picker, WYSIWYG editor, etc.
