A new business venture in Thailand were doing very well but wanted a digital presence to attract customers. The shooting range was associated with the International Defensive Pistol Shooting Association (IDPA) and other formal organisations in Thailand.
I was an information architect working on a national healthcare system project for cyber security I designed an information structure where security professionals and the public could find the information they needed concerning cyber security in healthcare organisations. I worked most closely with a user researcher, an interaction designer and a content designer. First were content inventories (from stakeholders, subject matter experts and users) which, when combined, formed the materials for a card sort exercise.
A global risk information/security company (SaaS) had a portfolio of products that were developed separately from each other with different logins. Should they be merged? And if so, what would that look like? My job was to answer the first question from users' point-of-view and, once I found out that they should be, I researched and designed the resulting transformed service. I first documented the data model the company had of their content. This enabled me to understand the problem's scope. Once done and validated, I covered off previous research done by a consultancy that had produced some personas. I judged the research to be insufficient to solve the problems the company faced. I planned new research: A survey of customers, interviews with a range of users and a card sort of the content. This research indicated a very strong appetite for products to merge among users. The next problem was how would this look? By now, the personas done by the previous consultancy were discarded and I began a card sort to figure out how the content should be organised to be findable and useful for users. Another card sort with the same content was issued to company staff so that we could compare results. After the analysis and conclusions of research were done, a complete redesign was planned. This was initially with a clickable HTML prototype using the Bootstrap framework (excellent for rapid interactive prototyping) to communicate to the team and stakeholders and to get initial user feedback. Modifications and extensions were made by mapping user needs onto the new design and ensuring they would be met. Finally, the design was formally documented for development and testing. This was a great project to work out. The team was super-motivated and I collaborated closely with a business analyst, graphic designer, several developers and testers, and the product manager.
At one of the country's largest banks, there was a need for users to compare and select products with a choice of bank accounts as the first exemplar. I designed nine candidates by hand-drawn sketch and refined this to three using keystroke-level task analysis by removing the least efficient. The final three were tested for usability using a HTML prototype and a final design candidate was selected. This final design was refined in the light of users' behaviours and reports and submitted for development and testing after sharing the design with the technical teams.
The Department for International Trade had functions to allow UK companies to promote themselves on the global stage. My job was to manifold. I was tasked with understanding what features assisted companies that wished to begin or increase their international trade. I also tested our services' usability. Work included CRO (discovering a simple change that increased conversions from 19% to 37% overnight), understanding corporate due diligence and seeing how the Internet impacts global trade.
