Installed and configured Nagios from scratch to set up a robust monitoring solution. Integrated 100+ Linux and Windows servers for real-time health checks, service monitoring, and alerting. With Snort running, it generates large number of events and alerts. These have to be analyzed and intrusion analysts need to be constantly referring and observing the events occurring from various sources. This directly demands software, which automates this process and presents reports, which can provide graphical representations about the events and summaries the same. One such reporting tool is ACID ie Analysis Console for Intrusion Detection. It is a PHP-based analysis engine to search and process a database of security events generated by various IDSes, firewalls, and network monitoring tools. Snort is an excellent choice for a small to midsize network or the home user, especially with a "always on" connection such as cable and DSL. Snort performs better then many of the IDS packages that cost money, lots of money. It does have a learning curve but most good tools do in my opinion. Administrators that can master Snort and update it frequently can substantially reduce or negate harmful attacks against the system or network. The developers of Snort also do an excellent job of maintaining and upgrading the application and there is plenty of documentation out there to help you. There is also a few informative mail list dedicated to using and configuring Snort.
