The creation of a smart meter, with all the included technologies (metrology, COSEM, G3-PLC, HDLC, optical port, PCB, special enclosure) and all the required certifications (IEC 62053-21/23, IDIS, G3-PLC) is a complex task. The G3-PLC is a power line communication technology, which was recently extended with a Hybrid profile which introduces sub-gigahertz RF communication as a fallback option. G3-PLC Hybrid devices can choose dynamically and transparently between the power line and RF when communicating with a neighbor device, making the mesh network much more robust. I have been responsible for the development of the new G3 Hybrid library version and its integration into Pegasus. I have aided the project by doing feasibility testing for G3 communications on early prototypes and validation testing before G3 certification. It was hard work, but Pegasus Hybrid became the first certified meter to have the new G3-PLC Hybrid technology.
