January.ai is a health supplement company that is passionate about helping people lead the healthiest lifestyle available to them. Tying technology and auto-tracked metrics; they created a way to measure and keep up with personal health goals. They had done a couple of sprints getting a custom code-based website off the ground. When they reached out to me, it was clear they needed someone that could migrate their design to a platform that was easier for their marketing and less-technical team members could manage. Since WordPress powers a little less than half of all the websites on the internet, it was no surprise they showed interest in the open source platform. After I gave them a brief demo of how their custom functionality could not only be recreated but edited on WordPress; they were more than onboard. Development was pretty straightforward. Since the design was already laid out, it wasn't too difficult to bring into the WordPress ecosystem. One thing that wasn't accounted for was the mobile format of the pages. Thankfully mobile optimization is one of my specializations, so not having a design ready for mobile were not a huge hurdle. Working with January.ai was a great experience. Although we had to do some squeezing since it was holiday season, both of us were able to work collaboratively very effectively. Something I'm sure was appreciated by both parties.
Biographic is a passionate California based ecological showcase website that brings important nature stories to light. They were looking for someone that could create content using their current templates and creating new templates. As their stories are incredibly diverse in focus, it was clear that they needed someone who could overall handle any design requests. Throughout my time at Biographic I have been handling these requests. Some have been on the more mundane day-to-day tasks that keep things operational. Things like adding a donation button on the header, adding analytic header codes, optimizing file size and deliver doesn't look super flashing. But it is important work for any website! However there were some components that were story specific and overall more exciting. Integrating these solutions within the Divi environment was crucial to preserve the teams workflow. First is the monthly break down slider. The concept for the piece was how icecaps were shrinking over the 2021 year. The slider allows a user to navigate through every month by hovering over it and autoplays when it isn't being interacted with. Second is the full screen image slider. Biographic has a lot of talented photographers taking beautiful photos. So it was appropriate to have a way to showcase and transition these images elegantly. Lastly was the looping video background asset for articles. Many articles have interactive visuals that pair with the article text, so allowing Divi to do so was an important step. Throughout my time working with Biographic I have found a new perspective for Divi. Finding creative solutions that work within Divi has been a great experience!
Asap Divorce reached out to me with a very curious question. "Is there anyway to hand you a set of PDFs that can be filled by an online form?". This is the type of question I love; a question I don't have the answer to. These kinds of questions always make me respond in the same manner: "Let me find out". It only took a bit of investigation to find out that this request has been given to many web developers before me. Unfortunately solutions for this request were not as straightforward. But solutions were there, and that was all I needed to turn back around and say "this is more than possible". I strayed away a bit from the norm on this project and started on development first. Design is usually reserved as the first part of the process to ensure the "look and feel" is set before code is written. It is easier to move around a design file than to rewrite code. However since the PDF automation was the focal point of the project; I wanted to ensure that it was fully operational before we proceed to the client-facing parts of the website. First development started with a test PDF. We needed the format the PDF to have inputs ready to receive data from the web from. Then it was creating a form that matched the PDF inputs. Finally a code library was installed to handle all the data receiving and inputting to the PDFs. While the library did most of the heavy lifting in inputting the PDF data, setting it up correctly in both code, input, and PDFs was a challenge within itself. After the PDF filler functions were sorted came the most challenging and tedious task of the project. Setting up the actual PDFs to be used. These were technical forms that handled many aspects of divorce that were specific to Florida. To say the client and I needed major collaboration was an understatement. Thankfully; after much needed back and forth we were able to establish what kind of data was needed on each pdf and how that would correspond to the online form. Finally after the core of the site functionality was established, we could move on to the client-facing parts of the website. Things like the homepage, shop, informational pages, etc. etc. This part of the process followed the status quo to a tee. We started off with a discussion to get a wide view of how the business should look and feel online. Then we zoomed in on individual details as we created mockup for the individual pages. Once everything was agreed on and the mockups were approved; we moved on to creating them as actual webpages. This project was one of the more in-depth and challenging sites of the 2021 year. It made me step out of my comfort zone outside of regular static page brochure sites. I am very thankful for this experience as it not only made me a better developer; but one that is more confident in their skills. If you ever have a question in the "is this possible" realm, feel free to shoot. I may know right off the bat and if not I am no stranger to investigating how to make your business needs a reality!
Blue Bear Creative, like many other companies, was trying to offload as much administration work as possible so they could stay focused on making marketing miracles. This led them to use a third party company called Breezy that would handle their HR and hiring practices so they could zone in on the "performance" parts of the hiring process. This was all fine and dandy until the Blue Bear team took a look at the auto generated "Careers/Application" page the Breezy system had created for them. This is a common problem with offloading web components to third party company. Most of the time the products work great and as intended, but the front facing piece is so off-brand and off-marketing that it hurts. With a marketing focused company like Blue Bear, this was unacceptable. Thankfully front-end website technologies have been constantly updating alongside their back-end counterpart. Things that used to require editing of the actual html markup like adding images and page dividers can be done quite elegantly (albeit painfully since there are no changes to the source code). So next time your company is faced with the prospect of dealing with an ugly product because it functions so well...don't settle! We can wrangle that bad boy and fit it in a form factor that not only matches but exudes your brand identity!
The owner of FrankCalled reached out to me because they needed someone with the technical know-how to bring their vision to reality. They wanted to ease the process of providing feedback to employers and managers. We wanted to simplify the process on both end and avoid any unnecessary conflicts. The main concern for this project was spam and harassment. We went through multiple iterations and pass throughs but decided the possibility of exploitation was way too high. Whenever creating a messaging application you have to keep in mind the humanistic element and do your best to avoid at best annoying people and at worst harassing them. Another thing to consider was the overall design of the site. Since the whole point of the site was to reduce conflict, the design needed to reflect that. I opted to use a lot of circular shapes and curves to bring that smooth and soothing aesthetic forward. When the user experience is smooth it needs a great design to really immerse the user. At the end of the project everyone was extremely happy. The owner of FrankCalled love the operation and the design of the site. The end users had a smooth and easy experience sending their feedback to their respective party. And the receivers of the messages can rest easy theres not a tool to persistently spam them.
